RAINFOREST
Wir befinden uns in Ecuador. Unser Weg führt über einen östlichen Kordillerenstrang, wo wir die Papallacta Passhöhe in 4.000 Meter Höhe überqueren. Vorbei an phantastischen tropischen Berg- und Nebelwäldern erreichen wir bald die tropischen Regenwälder des Rio Napo und seines Nebenflusses Arajuno. Der Gegensatz könnte nicht größer sein – vom kargen, kühlen Hochland in einer vierstündigen Talfahrt durch die dichten Nebelwaldwaldstrukturen ins 3.700 Meter tiefer gelegene dünnbesiedelte Regenwaldgebiet der Amazonastiefebene. Vor uns liegt das ungeheuer große, feuchtwarme Amazonasbecken mit seinen undurchdringlichen und artenreichen Tropenwäldern. Hier ist der Anfang einer unermesslichen Waldzone, die 2500 km lang dem Amazonas abwärts bis an seine Mündung folgt. Eine kolossale Biosphäre, die auch das gesamte Weltklima nachhaltig beeinflusst. Mit der Überquerung des Rio Napo bei Tena berühren wir die Randzone des Regenwaldes. Auf dem Arajuno flussaufwärts erleben wir einen Teil des Spektrums, das die vielfältige und für uns exotische Flora und Fauna des Regenwalds ausmacht.
We are in Ecuador. Our way leads over an eastern cordillera strand, where we cross the Papallacta pass at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Passing fantastic tropical mountain and cloud forests we soon reach the tropical rainforests of the Rio Napo and its tributary Arajuno. The contrast couldn't be greater - from the barren, cool highlands in a four-hour descent through the dense cloud forest structures into the sparsely populated rain forest area of the Amazon lowlands 3,700 metres below. In front of us lies the enormous, warm and humid Amazon basin with its impenetrable and species-rich tropical forests. This is the beginning of an immense forest zone that follows the Amazon down to its mouth for 2500 km. A colossal biosphere that has a lasting influence on the entire world climate. With the crossing of the Rio Napo near Tena we touch the edge zone of the rainforest. On the Arajuno upstream we experience a part of the spectrum that constitutes the diverse and for us exotic flora and fauna of the rainforest.
